Best budget areas

Bangkok

Khao San and Rambuttri have the most hostels and the cheapest beds, plus walking access to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. It is loud at night. Silom and Sathorn are calmer, on the BTS and MRT, with great street food after dark. Ari is local and leafy, with cafes and easy BTS access.

Chiang Mai

Stay inside or right next to the Old City moat. Most temples are walkable and red songthaews cost a flat ฿30. Nimman has newer hotels and cafes at a higher price. Santitham is the cheapest area for long stays.

The islands

On Koh Phi Phi, sleep away from Tonsai's bar strip if you want to sleep at all. On Koh Tao, Sairee has the most dorms and dive-school deals. On Koh Lanta, Long Beach and Klong Khong have bungalows at hostel prices outside peak season.

Seven ways to pay less

  1. Share a private room. Two people in a ฿800 room pay less each than two island dorm beds.
  2. Book refundable, then check again. Prices drop close to the date outside peak season. Free cancellation lets you rebook.
  3. Go fan, not AC, in the cool season. From November to February a fan room is fine in the north and saves about ฿200 a night.
  4. Avoid the big three dates. Christmas to New Year, Chinese New Year and Songkran (13–15 April) push prices up everywhere.
  5. Stay longer, ask for a discount. Many guesthouses give a weekly rate if you ask at the desk.
  6. Compare two sites. Booking.com and Trip.com often show different prices for the same Thai guesthouse.
  7. Use the sleeper train as a night's stay. A ฿838 lower berth from Bangkok to Chiang Mai replaces a hotel night.
