Cheap flights to Thailand

Which airport to choose, when to fly, and the booking tricks that actually save money.

Updated October 2026 · Prices in baht with US dollars at about ฿33.5 = $1

Flights are usually the single biggest cost of a Thailand trip, often more than two weeks on the ground. The good news: Bangkok is one of the best-connected cities in Asia, so there is real competition on most routes.

Which airport to fly into

AirportGood for
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK)Main international hub, most long-haul flights. Airport Rail Link to the city from ฿45.
Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK)Low-cost hub for AirAsia and Nok Air flights around Asia and inside Thailand.
Phuket (HKT)Direct flights from Europe, Australia and the Middle East in high season. Best for the Andaman coast.
Chiang Mai (CNX)Flights from other Asian cities. Handy for an open-jaw trip.
Koh Samui (USM)Small private airport. Convenient but usually expensive; flying to Surat Thani and taking the ferry is cheaper.

How to find a cheap fare

  1. Search Bangkok, not just your end point. A long-haul flight to BKK plus a domestic hop is often cheaper than a through ticket to Phuket or Krabi.
  2. Be flexible by a few days. Use the calendar or month view and pick the cheapest day, not the most convenient one.
  3. Try open-jaw. Fly into Bangkok and out of Phuket, or the other way round, to avoid backtracking.
  4. Look at self-transfer routes. From Europe, a cheap flight to a Gulf or Asian hub plus a separate ticket to Bangkok can beat direct fares. Leave plenty of connection time, because separate tickets are not protected.
  5. Avoid peak dates. Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year and Songkran (13–15 April) push fares up.
  6. Book bags in advance on low-cost carriers. Adding luggage at the airport costs much more.

Flights inside Thailand

Domestic flights from Don Mueang to Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and Surat Thani are often cheap if booked a few weeks ahead. Compare the total with the sleeper train or overnight bus, which also save a night's accommodation: a 2nd class lower berth to Chiang Mai costs ฿838–1,038.

If your flight is delayed or cancelled

Flights to or from Europe, and on European airlines, may qualify for compensation under EU and UK rules when they are delayed by three hours or more or cancelled late. These services check your flight for free and charge only if they win.
