Thailand tours worth booking

Pay for the experiences you cannot do alone, and do the rest yourself.

Updated October 2026 · Prices in baht with US dollars at about ฿33.5 = $1

Most of Thailand is free or cheap to explore on your own. A few experiences are worth paying for, either because you cannot do them independently or because a tour is actually cheaper than going alone.

Easy to do yourself

  • Bangkok's big temples. Grand Palace (฿500), Wat Pho (฿300) and Wat Arun (฿200) are walkable and linked by river boat. An audio guide on your phone costs less than a guide.
  • Ayutthaya. Cheap trains run from Bangkok; rent a bicycle at the station side of the river.
  • Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai. Shared songthaews go up the mountain; entry is about $1.50.
  • Island viewpoints. The Phi Phi viewpoint costs ฿30–50 and is a short, steep walk from Tonsai.

Skip or be careful

  • Any elephant riding, shows, or "bathing with elephants" programmes.
  • Cheap Bangkok tuk-tuk tours that stop at gem and tailor shops.
  • Tiger attractions and photo props with wild animals.
  • Jet-ski rentals on Phuket's beaches, a well-known damage scam. See scams to avoid.

Book ahead or on the spot? In high season (December to February) popular boat trips and sanctuaries sell out, so book a few days ahead. In the low season, booking on the spot can be cheaper, but check that boats are still running.

Questions people ask

A group longtail trip around Phi Phi Leh and Maya Bay costs ฿1,600–1,900 including the ฿400 national park fee, according to 2026 prices.

How much is an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai?

A full day at an ethical sanctuary costs about $75–100. Choose a place with no riding and no bathing.

Is Klook or KKday better for Thailand?

Both have big Thai catalogues. Compare the same tour on both, because prices and included pick-ups differ.
