Backpacking Thailand on $30 a day
A line-by-line daily budget and five habits that keep you under ฿1,000.
$30 is about ฿1,000. That is enough for a comfortable backpacker day almost anywhere in Thailand, and plenty in the north. The trick is not to skimp on everything, but to keep the four daily basics cheap so you have room for the things you came for.
A $30 day, line by line
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Dorm bed | ฿250–400 |
| Breakfast: 7-Eleven or a rice soup stall | ฿40–70 |
| Lunch: pad thai or noodle soup | ฿40–80 |
| Dinner at a night market | ฿80–150 |
| Fruit shake and water | ฿60–80 |
| Local transport: BTS, songthaew or bus | ฿30–80 |
| Two beers | ฿100–140 |
| Total before activities | ฿620–1,000 |
On a ฿740 Bangkok base day, a ฿200 temple still keeps you under ฿1,000. In Chiang Mai the base is closer to ฿610, which leaves room for a massage or a cooking class every few days.
The rules that make it work
1. Sleep cheap, not badly
Dorms cost ฿200–350 in Chiang Mai and ฿250–400 in Bangkok. Pick hostels with good reviews, lockers and air-conditioning in the hot season. If you are travelling as two, compare a ฿600–800 private room: it can cost the same as two beds.
2. Eat like a local
Three street-food meals cost ฿150–250. Restaurants on backpacker streets cost two or three times more for the same dishes.
3. Move overnight
The sleeper train to Chiang Mai (฿688–1,038 for a 2nd class berth) and overnight buses replace a night's accommodation.
4. Budget activities by the week
Pick one or two big-ticket items per week: a Phi Phi boat trip (฿1,600–1,900), an elephant sanctuary (about $75–100) or a cooking class (about $25–45). Fill other days with free temples, markets, beaches and viewpoints.
5. Watch the invisible costs
The ฿220 ATM fee, island beer prices and a daily Grab habit can each add ฿100–300 a day. Withdraw big amounts, drink from 7-Eleven, and walk or use the BTS.
Where $30 is tight
On Phi Phi and Koh Tao the base day is about ฿1,130, so $30 does not leave much for tours. Balance island days with cheap days in Chiang Mai, Pai or Bangkok.
