Best time to visit Thailand
Season by season and coast by coast, with the cheapest months to go.
The best overall time to visit Thailand is November to February: dry, sunny and cooler. It is also the most expensive and crowded. The cheapest months are in the rainy season, and because the two coasts have different rainy seasons, there is almost always somewhere with good weather.
Thailand's three seasons
| Season | When | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Cool and dry | November–February | Best weather in Bangkok, the north and the Andaman coast. Peak prices around Christmas and New Year. |
| Hot | March–May | Very hot everywhere. Smoky haze in the north from about February to April. Songkran water festival 13–15 April. |
| Rainy | June–October | Short, heavy showers most days. Lowest prices and fewer crowds. Rough seas on the Andaman side. |
The two coasts
| Coast | Best | Wettest |
|---|---|---|
| Andaman coastPhuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Lanta | November–April | May–October |
| Gulf coastSamui, Phangan, Tao | February–August | roughly October–December |
So in July and August, head to Koh Tao or Koh Samui rather than Phuket. In January, both coasts are good, but the Andaman side is at its best.
Cheapest time to go
The rainy months from May to October have the lowest room rates and the easiest bookings, apart from local holidays. Rain usually comes in short bursts, so most days still have plenty of dry hours. The trade-offs: some Andaman boat trips stop or get rough, and a few small island resorts close.
Shoulder months are a good compromise: early November before the Christmas peak, and late February to March on the Gulf islands.
Festivals worth planning around
- Songkran (13–15 April). Thai New Year and a nationwide water fight. Fun, but transport and rooms fill up. Book early.
- Loy Krathong and Yi Peng (November, full moon). Floating lanterns and candles, with Chiang Mai the most famous place to see them. Prices rise there.
- Full Moon Party (monthly, Koh Phangan). Rooms near Haad Rin cost more around the party and often have minimum stays.
- Christmas to New Year, Chinese New Year. The most expensive weeks of the year.
