How to enjoy Phuket without paying Patong prices.

Phuket has a reputation for being expensive, and Patong can be. But the island also has cheap buses, an affordable old town and quieter beaches. Skip taxis and Patong's bars and Phuket becomes a reasonable base for the Andaman coast.

Where to stay cheaply

Phuket Town is the budget pick: guesthouses, colourful Sino-Portuguese streets, cheap food and buses to the beaches. Kata and Karon are calmer than Patong with good beaches. Patong has the nightlife and the highest prices.
