Thailand vs Bali
Daily costs compared with the same 2026 data for both, and which trip suits you.
Thailand and Bali are the two classic Southeast Asia budget trips, and in 2026 they cost almost exactly the same per day. The difference is in the kind of trip you want.

Costs side by side
| Backpacker, per day | Thailand | Bali |

Where Bali wins
- Slightly cheaper dorms on average (Ubud and Kuta from about $6).
- Villas with private pools at prices that would buy a basic room elsewhere.
- Surf, rice terraces and a strong yoga and wellness scene, all on one island.
Where Thailand wins
- Far more variety: a megacity, mountains and two island coasts in one trip.
- Better overland transport: sleeper trains, buses and ferries are cheap and easy.
- Street food culture is deeper and cheaper in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
Which should you choose?
Pick Bali if you want one island base, surf lessons, villas and a slower pace.
Pick Thailand if you want to move around, mix city and islands, and eat street food every day.
