Is Thailand cheap in 2026?

Yes, Thailand is still cheap for most visitors, especially if you eat street food, sleep in hostels or guesthouses, and travel overland. It is not cheap everywhere, though, and a few costs catch people out.

A backpacker can live on ฿800–1,000 a day ($24–$30), and Hostelz puts Thailand's average backpacker day at $36 in October 2026, about half of Mexico ($69) or Portugal ($68).

Where it gets expensive

  • The islands. Beds, food and beer cost noticeably more. Phi Phi hostels are ฿400–700 and beers ฿80–150.
  • Boats and tours. A Phi Phi longtail trip is ฿1,600–1,900, two dives ฿2,500–3,500. These can double a day's spend.
  • Bangkok's big temples. Grand Palace ฿500, Wat Pho ฿300, Wat Arun ฿200, all in one day adds up.
  • ATM fees. ฿220 per withdrawal, every time.
  • Western food and imported alcohol. Pizza, wine and cocktails cost close to home prices.
  • Taxis on Phuket. A meter taxi from the airport to Patong is about ฿600–700 plus ฿100.

Is Thailand getting more expensive?

Hotel prices in tourist hotspots have risen since travel bounced back, and the baht has been stronger against the dollar than a few years ago, at about ฿33.5 to $1 in October 2026. Street food, transport and guesthouses outside the hotspots are still very affordable. The planned ฿300 tourist fee was still not being charged in mid-2026.

How to keep it cheap

  1. Spend more of your time in the north, where daily costs are lowest.
  2. Travel overland and overnight: a sleeper train is transport and a bed in one.
  3. Eat where Thais eat, one street back from the tourist strip.
  4. Make fewer, bigger ATM withdrawals and use a fee-free card.
  5. Pick one or two paid boat trips, not one every day.
